early 1830's - nearly 125,000 Native Americans lived on millions of acres of land in GA, TN, AL, NC, FL
federal government forced them to leave and move across the Mississippi River (known as the Trail of Tears)
moved the Native Americans so that white settlers could use land for farming
state governments tried to drive Native Americans out of the south
even after Cherokee Nation vs. Georgia and Worcester vs. Georgia, mistreatment continued
Andrew Jackson was an advocate of what he called "Indian Removal"
Jackson led campaigns against the Creeks and the Seminoles
Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act in 1830
forced them into stockades at bayonet point, then troops looted their homes and belongings and marched the Indians more that 1,200 miles
diseases common, starvation
tens of thousands of Native Americans were driven off their land
